TROUT UNLIMITED CANADA RECEIVES SPECIAL CENTENNIAL
COMMUNITY GRANT FROM UNION GAS

Funds will enable the Ted Knott Chapter to hold public information meetings to create better awareness of the amazing recovery of Mill Creek, Cayuga

Burlington, ON – Trout Unlimited Canada has been awarded a $1,000 Centennial Community Grant from Union Gas to support a series of informative local meetings to illustrate the remarkable volunteer effort being put forth by the region’s citizens and organizations to return Mill Creek to its former state: A thriving brook trout ecosystem.

Union Gas is celebrating 100 years of delivering safe, reliable and affordable service to customers and communities across Ontario in 2011. This award is one of 100 Centennial grants of $1,000 each that Union Gas is giving out to support charitable projects focused on the environment, community safety and education across the province.

Dave Lamoureux, Union Gas District Manager for Hamilton/Haltom, presented the cheque to Bill Christmas, president, Ted Knott Chapter, Trout Unlimited Canada at a presentation today at the Union Gas Burlington offices on Mainway Drive.

“A passionate commitment to stewardship, safety and win-win relationships are all central to our business culture and operations,” said Lamoureux . “Our success as one of North America’s premier natural gas storage, transmission and distribution companies is shared with the communities we serve and we can’t think of a better way to mark this occasion than by giving back to a community program that so closely aligns with these business values.”

The project began in 2006 has since been working to restore a local brook trout stream, destroyed in 1967 when a dam was constructed at Taquanyah Conservation Area to create a failed fishing lake. Removal of the dam and a major effort involving subsequent stream remediation and monitoring will ensure the return of a healthy, self sustaining trout population after an absence of over 40 years.

“Haldimand County needs a good news story,” said Christmas. “Rolling back the environmental clock 40 years with community effort sums it up nicely. It has been an effort covering all generations and bodes well for continued environmental awareness in this province.”
